Dean Stephens recognizes we are at a critical time in our nation's history. Action is needed. The world is getting more competitive while America is getting less competitive. A partisan war is wasting the energy of our people while a powerful force called Islamo-fascism is threatening to destroy our way of life. As has been predicted by brilliant philosophers, pure democracy is driving us down the path towards greater and bigger government that consumes more and more of the nation's wealth, reducing wealth in the process. We are becoming the "me" nation, justifying taking from other's to satisfy our own wants and granting to bureaucrats the power to take our freedoms as long as they pander to our wants.
There was a time in our past when most Americans embraced the philosophy of freedom represented by the famous quote, "I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." We shared a passionate commitment to freedom for everyone in our nation. Today that commitment to freedom is being eviscerated by laws like McCain-Feingold, the essence of which is a new quote, "I disagree with what you say and will send bureaucrats to control and fine you for daring to say it in my presence."
Is there any doubt why action is needed NOW?
Three generations of growing socialism and special interest earmarks have taken us far down a road that most of our people reject philosophically. It is fueled by a belief that we might as well vote for our self interest as "everyone else does it". This is not the American Dream or the American Way. We must return to a concern for what works for all rather than what works for "me".
First is defense of our nation against the war being waged by the Islamo-fascists and other enemies. Security of the people is the first order.
Next we must prepare the next generation and equip them with the best education possible under the control of parents. A representative democracy is dependent on a thoughtful and intelligent people. Our current public education system is a disaster.
Finally we must promote a society which recognizes that wealth is created. Our economic system must not destroy the nation's wealth creating genius by redistributing wealth, simultaneously ending the willingness to take chances while reducing the motivation to work hard. Socialism is the system that has failed again and again. Free enterprise works.
We are the greatest nation on earth at a time when the world is better off than it has ever been. We need to appreciate what we have if we want to improve it and share it with the future. It is amazing but the action needed is to return to the conservative principles of the distant past combined with the individual freedom of libertarian solutions of today.
